New Year, New Name

Monday, December 31st, 2007

I’m updating the title of this blog to my name as it’s seems altogether more fitting. When I started blogging a couple of years ago, this space was a bit of dumping ground. A place where I could rant away to myself in relative obscurity. As this Bunty diary of mine has developed over the past while, I find that my anonymity isn’t really an issue. That coupled with the fact that a lot of my social presences link here. Everything else stays the same.

Wordpress Rush 2.3.2 Out Door, Twitter On the Ball

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

Wordpress has had to rush 2.3.2 out the door to fix a security hole that could allow an unscrupulous hacker access your future-timed posts. Wordpress is advising all Wordpress blog owners to upgrade to 2.3.2 as soon as possible.

Twitter is becoming ever my medium of choice for breaking news and as in its wont, Steve Rubel posted a tweet highlighting a Cybernet News post that identified the hack hole. As it stands, CNN proposed a temporary fix that didn’t work. However, that doesn’t matter now as 2.3.2 has been released.

That tweet was thirteen hours ago, build 2.3.2 was released just three hours ago. I’m sure that the news has been bubbling under for quiet a while. It just goes to show that breaking news on a broadcast messaging services like Twitter by well-subscribed voices can make a difference for news alerts. One wonders how many blogs have been hacked and posts revealed.

Happy Surviving Christmas

Friday, December 28th, 2007

I decided to forgo the stereotypical Christmas post sending greetings for the best of the festive season, in order to post to say congratulations for surviving it all.

Hopefully, all the turkey has been wiped up at this stage and you’ve had the obligatory arguments with all in sundry. Happy kicking back for the gap between Christmas and New Years! Happy Gap. Good luck all for 2008. May your happiness and health be boundless.

Limerick Tweetup - Wheels in Motion

Friday, December 28th, 2007

Okay, so after some deep thinking, January 6th has been provisional penciled in as the first Limerick Tweetup. We’re going for dinner.

If you are interested, get in touch with me on Twitter, Jaiku or here in the comments. Venue ideas welcome. If no ideas are forthcoming, then I assume absolute control of the brainstorming of this dictatorship and we go to the Chicken Hut(ch) or Kranks. :) Get thinking.

Another online apparel store to bookmark - The Giant Peach. It’s a bit more pricey than your average Threadless-esque shop, but seems to have some very nice wares.

Ha, Jezlyn got my package.

Still in a festive mood? While over on Paddy’s Valley, I caught this Macy’s ad and loved it. Respect. You don’t see Dunnes wheel out our pseudo celebs on telly to sell their tat.

2007: My Highlights

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

As every other news outlet seems to be doing a review of the year with 2008 around the corner, I thought that this would be a great time to look back at 2007’s biggest tech moments for me. I have so many, but here are my top three in no particular order!

1. Street Release of Office 2007

Working as part Office International team, it was exciting to see a product evolving in front of my eyes hitting the street and getting lots of feedback (both good and critical). Every iteration of Office has seen the product evolve and move in new directions. Yes, I’m biased. I expect Office 14 to do the same

2. Joining Twitter

I joined Twitter back in March, just to play around with technology and to tune into the Irish scene. I blame Conor. He was my first add. In the meantime, I’ve meet so many interesting people and even organised a pair of Tweetups. More news on those soon. It’s amazing to witness the amount of knowledge out there in the microblogging ether. Amazing and humbling.

3. Paddy’s Valley

I couldn’t finish a list of my 2007 highlights, without mention Paddy’s Valley. We were a motley bunch, all with different goals for the trip, yet all sharing passion and enthusiasm. Our trip was eyeopening. We were so blessed to have visited so many amazing places and have met some many accomplished people willing to share their experience and wisdom so freely.

Back!

Sunday, December 23rd, 2007

So, all my rushing about is done. I’m nicely ensconced for Christmas. I’ve half of my pressies bought and, sure, the others will find themselves in the next couple of days :)

Conrad Black’s ‘The Invincible Quest: The Life and Times of Richard Milhous Nixon’. Yes, it’s revisionism of the highest order, but damned entertaining. Good pick for a last
minute Xmas gift. Now to finish this and move onto Black’s FDR biog.

Oh, ’tis a murky business. Damien’s post reminds me of my recent Sneaky Selling post.

Suzy is writing some cracking posts on the Micheal Lynn case and the state of Irish academia. Too many to just cherrypick a single post.
