Grubby Typing is Not Blogging
I see that there’s a squeeze over in Mulley’s gaff to push categories into the 2008 Blog awards. Virtually all of the comments making suggestions so far have been made solely on the grounds of self-interest. “Please, please - have a category for my blog… I want to the link love and eyeball time”. You can almost taste the metallic taint of blood, as bodies are clambered and climbed over. It’s almost as bad as bloggers who beg for votes for awards. I’m *so* looking forward to that silly season in the Spring.
For the most part, blogging is an ego exercise. Anyone who disagrees is telling lies. People publish to be read. If one wanted to write a piece purely for the writing, it would stay on their hard drives. Yes, me included. I like to write and read. Mostly a GIGO diet - garbage in, garbage out.
And Mulley is the ringleader. For the second time in just a few days, he’s holding a show that appeals to the greed of bloggers. All I’m asking for, is that bloggers sit back and think about why they blog. Ego yes - but that can’t be the whole reason. And Damien - stop appealing to the base instincts of your readership.

Oh, there are _far_ more sinister reasons to blog than ego, as we have seen with the recent link sale controversy. Ego is probably one of the less scary reasons…

I’m ignoring those cretins altogether. I’m just repulsed by the grimey self-interest being exhibited over at Mulley’s place.. Ick

@walter Thanks

Spot on. I don’t think Damien was expecting that though.
I was browsing through the categories already decided upon and indeed notice that “my” category wasn’t there. But as you mentioned in your comment, there are not enough blogs to warrant an award… hence the second for an expat category.
Damien is not the kind of person that will add a category just to please the masses though (I don’t think so anyway!).

@Dave Thanks. I know that Damien wasn’t going to add categories willy nilly. I just wanted to make a callout on how the commenters were abusing their chance to shape the 08 awards.

Judging by his last reply to your comment he’s already well aware of it anyway. But yea, there are quite a few in there with a bit of an agenda all right but as you said, it’s al about eyeballs.
Slightly off topic, but why did it take me so long to find your blog? (You have a new subscriber)

Yeah - I think he’s on the ball alright.. Hard to pull the wool over Damien’s eyes. I just felt it needed to be said.
Wow, thanks Dave. Happy to have you on-board. I’ve been blogging for a couple of months now… I used to be aggregated on IrishBlogs.ie until I moved hosting and now their aggregation monster ignores me. I’m happy with what I have for the moment. I like to build my sub base naturally.

Well there ya go
Just goes to show that commenting on other peoples blogs IS a valid form of network and promotion.
FYI: Your RSS feed doesn’t work for me in Google reader, I had to use your Atom feed. Maybe it’s me though.

Indeed - commenting can be useful.
Thanks Dave. I’ll take a look at the RSS.
